CONSTRUCTION AND CORRECT USE AND DISINFECTION METHODS OF BIOPSY FORCEPS

Construction of biopsy forceps

The biopsy forceps consists of a tip, a body, and an operating handle. Many accessories such as foreign body forceps, hot biopsy forceps, scissors, and scrapers are similar in structure to the biopsy forceps.

Tip

The tip is formed by two cup-shaped forceps that can be opened and closed. The shape of the forceps is the key to the different functions of various biopsy forceps. There are roughly seven types: single-opening, double-opening, window-opening, needle-opening, oval-opening, crocodile-opening, and curved-tip-opening. The forceps jaws of the biopsy forceps are made of stainless steel, and the blade is sharp. Although the blade of the disposable biopsy forceps is also sharp, its wear resistance is poor. The blade of the reusable biopsy forceps has been specially treated on the surface to make it more durable.

Body

The biopsy forceps body is composed of a stainless steel threaded tube, which contains a steel wire that can open and close the forceps jaws. Due to the special structure of the threaded tube, substances such as tissue mucus and blood are easily enter the inside, but it is not easy to clean thoroughly. Failure to clean thoroughly can make the biopsy forceps difficult to operate, with the jaws unable to open smoothly or even not at all.

Operating handle

The loop on the operating handle is used to clamp the thumb, and the wide circular groove is used to place the index and middle fingers. Under the operation of these three fingers, the force is transmitted to the forceps jaws through the traction steel wire for opening and closing.

Key points for using biopsy forceps

The use and maintenance of endoscopic biopsy forceps require careful attention, otherwise it will affect the use of the endoscope.

Pre-inspection

Before use, it should be confirmed that the biopsy forceps have been sterilized and used within the effective sterilization time. Before inserting the endoscope forceps tube, the opening and closing of the forceps jaws must be checked.

The specific method is to bend the biopsy forceps body into a large circle (approximately 20 cm in diameter), and then perform multiple opening and closing actions to observe whether the forceps jaws open and close smoothly. If there are 1-2 instances of unsmooth opening or closing, it is better not to use the biopsy forceps. Secondly, the closure of the biopsy forceps should be checked. Take a thin paper such as letter paper, clamp it with the biopsy forceps, and it is qualified if the paper does not fall off. Thirdly, it is necessary to observe whether the two cup-shaped jaws of the forceps are completely aligned. If there is a dislocation phenomenon, immediately stop using it, otherwise the forceps tube will be scratched.

Precautions during operation

Before inserting the forceps tube, the forceps jaws should be closed, but do not use too much force for fear of inadequate closure, which will cause the traction steel wire to be pulled too long and affect the opening and closing degree of the forceps jaws. When inserting the tube, it should be inserted in the direction of the forceps tube opening without friction with the tube opening. When encountering resistance during insertion, the angle knob should be loosened and inserted as much as possible in the natural straight state. If it still cannot pass, the endoscope should be removed from the body for testing, or other biopsy forceps with smaller specifications should be replaced. When pulling out the biopsy forceps, do not use too much force. The assistant should alternate with both hands and bend them, instead of stretching both arms too much. If the jaws cannot be closed, do not forcibly pull them out. At this time, the endoscope should be pushed out of the body together before further handling.

Maintenance and care

The endoscopic biopsy forceps should be rinsed immediately with running water after use to remove tissue debris and mucus on the surface, and then soaked in a detergent or enzyme solution to keep it moist. This step is the most critical link to ensure the durability of the biopsy forceps, while the cleaning of the ultrasound cleaning machine is another key step. The biopsy forceps cleaned by ultrasonic wave are as bright as new.

The sterilized biopsy forceps should be stored in a sterile storage area, or taken out of the disinfectant solution before use and rinsed with sterile water. In order to keep the forceps jaws open and close freely, lubricant oil should be added to their joints frequently, but attention should be paid to selecting the type of oil, such as paraffin oil, and avoiding the use of silicone oil in the endoscope box. After applying the lubricant oil, the excess oil should be wiped off, and only the lubricant inside the joints should be retained, achieving invisible lubrication.
